History

N K Baynes was founded in 1952 by Norman Baynes, in then Rhodesia. Its original business was based around the importation of solid timber from Europe and the USA.  It was located initially in a rondavel in the garden of the Baynes family home in Salisbury.

Chris Baynes joined the Company in the early 1970’s – and the name was changed to N K Baynes and Son.  Shortly after Chris joined the company – Norman passed away.

Chris then went on to incorporate various other products in to the range the business was supplying – including release liner papers for milk cartons and medical use – and also the introduction of Finished Paper Foils.

The company relocated to South Africa in 1980 after independence in Zimbabwe – and in the early 1990’s when Tim Joined the business – the concept of warehousing stocks for smaller companies was introduced.

This concept changed the face of the business so that it was now able to support smaller enterprises that did not have the ability to import stock directly from Germany – but could rather purchase one roll at a time when cash flow allowed it – directly from source in S A.

Slowly – all ancillary products were dropped from the range – until N K Baynes represented only MASA Décor – the Finished Paper Foil producer working out of Germany.

During the early 2000’s – The Company expanded to an additional operating warehouse and offices spread to KZN.

It was also around this time that the Company elected to change from the importation of foil form Germany – and to only focus on purchasing material from Toppan in Japan.  This has enabled N K Baynes to import top quality products from the largest printer in the World – with exceptional quality. The constant upgrading of designs and lacquer surfaces by Toppan allows for the creation of realism in the designs which is second to none.

The Company and has seen three generations of Baynes’s coming through its doors over its almost 7 decade history since its inception in 1952.  These three generations are represented by the three trees in the logo.

Although we look after clients from large manufacturing concerns – we have always  nurtured our smaller clients – as they have a habit of growing over time.  Each one of our customers is therefore treated with the same respect and courtesy – whether they purchase 1 000 m2 from us per annum – or 1 000 000 m2.

Over time – our clients have become our friends – as have our suppliers.  We pride ourselves on developing relationships – and our biggest asset is our dedication to – and ability to work with the client base we have.  We don’t sell a product – we sell a service.
